YUNTIAN EUROPEAN DOUBLE GIRDER CRANE – AUTOMOTIVE PLANT, POLAND
Background
A Tier-1 automotive component manufacturer in the Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, constructed a new engine block machining and assembly workshop. The 200-metre production bay required reliable overhead lifting for loading castings into CNC centres, transferring semi-finished blocks between workstations, and positioning completed engine assemblies onto inspection rigs. The building was designed with a reduced roof height to minimise construction and climate-control costs, and all lifting equipment had to comply with FEM/DIN standards and CE certification.
The Challenge
1.Low headroom constraint: a conventional double girder crane would have required raising the roof height, adding significant structural steel cost across the 200-metre bay.
2.Limited column load capacity: the pre-designed steel columns could not support a heavy crane with high wheel loads without foundation reinforcement.
3.Precision requirement: engine block machining required ±1mm positioning tolerance when loading workpieces weighing up to 32 tonnes, demanding smooth acceleration and deceleration without load sway.

The Solution
Four Yuntian European Double Girder Overhead Travelling Cranes were installed, each with 32-tonne capacity and 25-metre span, equipped with a New European style trolley and dual-speed hoisting unit.
The compact European trolley with low-headroom hoist maximised hook height within the existing building envelope, eliminating the need to raise the roof. FEM-optimised double box-girder design reduced deadweight by approximately 20% and lowered wheel loads correspondingly, allowing operation on the existing columns without reinforcement. VFD control across all three motion axes delivered shock-free starting and stopping, enabling precise load positioning while dual-speed hoisting provided both efficient transfer cycles and fine-positioning mode for machining and inspection workstations.
Key Advantages
1.Maximised hook height within a low-headroom building, eliminating the need for structural modifications
2.Approximately 20% lighter deadweight and lower wheel loads, saving roughly 15% on civil engineering costs
3.VFD-controlled shock-free motion enabling ±1mm positioning accuracy without manual adjustment
4.Dual-speed hoisting for both efficient material transfer and precise workpiece alignment
5.Full CE certification and compliance with FEM/DIN standards
The Result
All four cranes were delivered and commissioned within 10 weeks, meeting the project's tight construction schedule. The cranes maintained 99.8% operational availability during the first 12 months of continuous three-shift operation with no unplanned stoppages. The manufacturer reported measurable throughput improvement attributable to smooth VFD-controlled load handling and dual-speed hoisting, which together reduced engine block positioning times at machining centres and inspection rigs.
