YUNTIAN SINGLE JIB PORTAL CRANE OPTIMISES CARGO HANDLING AT A SOUTHEAST ASIAN GENERAL PORT

Background
A Southeast Asian general cargo port operator was building a new multi-purpose terminal targeting 1.5–2 million tonnes annually across bulk, general, and containerised cargo. The existing 12 berths were equipped with rail foundations, requiring a crane that could integrate without major infrastructure changes.
The Challenge
1.Existing quay foundations could only support moderate wheel loads, ruling out heavy cranes without costly upgrades.
2.One crane needed to handle coal, ore, and grain with grabs; general and project cargo with hooks; and occasional containers.
3.A narrow quay layout demanded a long reach with a compact footprint to keep transport routes clear.
4.Strict budget required an affordable solution with low total cost of ownership.

The Solution
Two Yuntian Single Jib Portal Cranes were installed, each with 40t hook / 25t grab capacity and a 43m working radius. They ran on the existing 12m rail gauge with 28m lifting height above rail and 18m below.
The lightweight single-jib design kept maximum wheel loads at approximately 250–275 kN—substantially lower than a four-link portal crane—eliminating quay reinforcement and saving about 18% in civil costs. Each crane weighed roughly 520 tonnes, well within the existing infrastructure limits.
A quick-change system enabled switching between hook, grab, and container spreader in 3–5 minutes. Full 360-degree slewing and coordinated four-motion operation allowed the crane to serve multiple loading points without repositioning. AC variable frequency drives (VFD) provided smooth, shock-free handling, protecting bagged and general cargo.
Key Advantages
1.Low wheel loads avoided quay upgrades, reducing civil engineering costs by ~18%.
2.Lightweight design operated on existing rail infrastructure with no modification.
3.Quick-change spreader handled multi-cargo operations efficiently.
4.43m radius and 360-degree slewing covered multiple berth positions.
5.VFD control ensured smooth load handling and lower mechanical stress.
6.CE and ISO 9001 certified.
The Result
Both cranes were delivered and commissioned within 18 weeks. In the first year, they handled approximately 1.8 million tonnes of cargo, remaining on track to exceed the terminal’s throughput target. Availability exceeded 98%, and the port reported shorter vessel turnaround times during peak periods. The investment was recovered within the projected timeframe.
