Background

The Port of Dar es Salaam handles the majority of Tanzania's international trade and serves as a transit hub for Zambia, Malawi, and the DRC. Rising container volumes and constrained yard space meant the terminal needed handling equipment that could move containers from quay to stack faster, stack higher, and operate without fixed rail infrastructure.


The Challenge

1. Constrained Yard Layout and Manoeuvrability

The terminal's layout was compact and irregular, with short but congested quay-to-yard corridors. Equipment needed a tight turning radius to work safely alongside quay cranes and truck lanes.

2. Higher Stacking Density Without Fixed Infrastructure

Stacking density was limited by the existing reach stacker fleet, which could only manage 1-over-2 high. Higher stacking without fixed rail infrastructure was essential.

3. Demanding Coastal Conditions and Driveline Reliability

Tropical coastal conditions meant equipment accumulated operating hours quickly. The operator wanted proven diesel-electric driveline technology, modular components for simpler maintenance, and lower emissions than existing diesel-only machines.

The Solution

1. Fleet Deployment and Core Specifications

The terminal operator commissioned 20 Yuntian diesel-electric Straddle Carriers, each with 50-tonne capacity and 1-over-3 container stacking capability. The eight-wheel hydrostatic drive system provided the tight turning radius required for the congested yard layout. As self-contained machines requiring no fixed rail infrastructure, runway beams, or conductor bars, each carrier could enter service within days of delivery.

2. Operational Flexibility and Maintenance Design

The Straddle Carriers handled 20-foot, 40-foot, and 45-foot ISO containers using a telescopic spreader with powered flippers. They could be operated in manual, semi-automated, or fully automated modes, with manual priority always retained. The terminal began with manual operation and retained the option to add GPS-based automation later. Modular, independently replaceable drive units, hydraulic components, and electrical systems simplified maintenance. Comprehensive safety systems were fitted as standard across all 20 units.

The Result

All 20 Straddle Carriers were commissioned before the peak shipping season. The operator reported faster quay-to-yard transfer speeds and improved container availability, directly attributable to the carriers' manoeuvrability and independence from fixed rail infrastructure. The 1-over-3 stacking configuration enabled higher throughput while reducing reliance on the older diesel reach stacker fleet. Modular design simplified routine maintenance, and standardised parts across the fleet reduced both downtime and spare parts requirements.
