Background
A cargo handling contractor operating out of Northport, Port Klang, Malaysia, runs a fleet of deck barges that shuttle bulk materials and breakbulk cargo between anchored coasters and riverside warehouses along the Strait of Malacca. One of their older straight-boom cranes was due for replacement, and they needed a compact telescopic unit that could stow neatly when the barge was under tow while still reaching far enough to transfer loads between vessels and the riverbank.

The Challenge
The barge deck offered limited space, so the crane's stowed footprint was a critical concern. The crew regularly faced three distinct lifting scenarios: shifting 10-tonne pallets of bagged cargo and steel coils onto waiting trucks at short radius, transferring lighter supplies to smaller vessels moored alongside at a longer outreach, and working through the monsoon season when salt-heavy humidity demanded proper corrosion protection. The crane needed to retract into a compact position during transit — clearing the deck for other cargo — and extend fully when the workday started, all without adding complexity to the crew's routine.

The Solution

The contractor installed a Yuntian marine telescopic boom crane configured for 15 tonnes at short radius and 1.5 tonnes at 25 metres outreach. The multi-section hydraulic telescopic boom retracts into a low-profile stowed position when the barge is under tow, leaving the deck free for stacked cargo. When the vessel pulls alongside a jetty or another ship, the boom extends through its full working range for cargo transfers. The hydraulic system's controlled flow kept load swing to a minimum, which the operators told us makes a real difference when handling fragile bagged cargo on a deck that's rarely perfectly still.

Key Advantages

1.Retractable boom frees barge deck space during transit

2.Smooth hydraulic control minimises load swing during vessel-to-shore transfers

3.Marine-grade corrosion protection for year-round operation in tropical humidity

4.Compact stowed footprint with 25m reach and 15t short-radius lift capacity

The Result
The crane was commissioned in August 2024 and ran through an entire northeast monsoon season without corrosion issues or unplanned downtime. The operator measured that moving the barge between jetties took noticeably less time with the new crane, since the crew no longer had to strip and restow deck cargo around the larger footprint of their old crane. After seeing the unit perform through the monsoon months, the contractor added a second Yuntian telescopic crane to another barge in their fleet the following year.
